Aucklanders invited to design Auckland Council logo

Aucklanders are to get the opportunity to design the logo for the new Auckland Council.

A public competition has been launched today and all Aucklanders are being invited to submit their designs.

Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey - who has 30 years of advertising experience and has been asked by the Auckland Transition Agency to chair the judging panel - said: "We want the public to take an active part, and this is their opportunity to get involved now.

“We’re looking for innovation – a symbol that will represent the Auckland Council and the role it will have in making this city one that people can really take pride in nationally and internationally."

The Auckland Council comes into being on November 1. But the new logo is needed before that by the Electoral Officer preparing for Auckland’s local body elections.

Auckland Transition Agency executive chairman Mark Ford said the logo should be designed and owned by Aucklanders. Everyone - including professional designers - is invited to take part.

Aucklanders will be able to submit their designs via a website www.aucklandcouncillogo.co.nz  or in hard copy form by post. Entry details will be on the website.

Joining Bob Harvey on the judging panel are: Dick Frizzell, Karen Walker, Hamish Keith, Ema Tavola, Wayne Pihema, and Bill Ralston.

Hamish Keith said he would be looking for a design that distils the image of Auckland. “It should be powerful and pleasing in itself,” he said.

The designer of the winning logo will get a ‘best of Auckland’ prize package valued at $10,000.

Competition information, entry form and competition terms and conditions are available on www.aucklandcouncillogo.co.nz, as well as at all council libraries and customer centres, and on 307 7274 during business hours or 0800 80 60 40 for those outside the Auckland free-calling area. The competition will run until March 19.
